jon karl who's been all over this story from the jump. jon, we've got the boehner plan and the reid plan. everybody in washington knows neither of these things can pass, so what, if anything, is being done right now to craft some sort of compromise? >> reporter: well, there are, as you heard jim mention, quiet negotiations going on between harry reid and mitch mcconnell. trying to find middle ground. mitch mcconnell has been on the phone several times, a many told, with vice president biden over the last several days. they are trying to find one last-ditch effort to get what everybody knows needs to happen, dan, and that is something that has bipartisan support. i got to tell you, though, the atmosphere is so poisoned here, the question is, once they get that agreement, can they pass it? >> well, let me pick up on that because there's been so much tough talk, even some trash talk, i wonder if there is another wiggle room rhetorically for r e hard-liners on either side to back down. >> reporter: well, i think there -- maybe not the hard-liners, but i think there actually is wiggle ro

. the power to solve this is in our hands. >> arthel: meanwhile, arizona senator jon kyl delivering the republican address. he is accusing democrats of using the debt crisis to raise taxes instead of viewing it as an opportunity to rein in spending. >> unfortunately, after weeks of negotiations, it became clear that democrats in washington did not view this crisis as an opportunity to rein in spending. instead, they saw it as an opportunity to impose huge tax increases on american families and small businesses. president obama is simply too committed to the european style of big government, that his policies have set in motion. to democrats in washington, the isn't to cut spending, but to raise taxes and keep on spending. democrats claim they would only target the privileged few, but behind the scenes, they argue for much broader tax increases. >> arthel: it looks like we may be hearing from senator reid very soon. in the meantime, the senate is expected to vote early sunday morning to cut off debate on its own debt ceiling plan. rick? >> rick: just as advertised, senator harry reid

are really embracing it as a way to draw others out. for instance, jon huntsman who is struggling in the polls now is really trying to use this as a referendum on mitt romney's leadership. not necessarily coming out saying he backed boehner's planning saying it's in the right direction, that he agrees that there should be no tax revenue and no tax hikes. so he's really trying to land some hits on romney in this instance. and, of course, all of them are using this to really make this argument that barack obama hasn't led, that he has no plan of his own, and that he is really a big spending liberal who has really presided over this massive increase in spending and deficit spending. >> right. so with the president's overall approval rating hitting a new low, it's now just 40%, do you think this debate helps or hurts the president in 2012? if everything gets done and over with here and we have an end of the summer sort of the heat and rhetoric all calms down, will this be a factor this time next year? >> i think it will definitely come up again. on the one hand, you're going to have r
